We Built a Video Distribution Tool and Launched It on Product Hunt
Yesterday, April 17, 2026, [ClipForge AI](https://clip-forge.io) went live on Product Hunt.
We finished with [UPVOTES] upvotes and ranked [RANK].
Here is the full breakdown of what we prepared, what worked, what surprised us, and what the actual numbers looked like — for anyone planning their own launch.
Why Product Hunt
Product Hunt is not primarily a customer acquisition channel. The conversion math rarely justifies treating it that way. The real value of a well-executed launch is threefold: backlink authority, social proof for future prospects who research before subscribing, and early adopter feedback that compresses six months of product iteration into one week.
For ClipForge, the timing was deliberate. We had cleared the critical product maturity threshold — multi-platform export, AI clip detection, auto-captioning, transcript-based editing — and the affiliate program had just gone live. A PH launch with affiliate-ready infrastructure means every PH-sourced subscriber has a path to becoming a distribution channel themselves.
What We Prepared (15 Days of Pre-Launch Work)
The preparation window started on April 2. Here is what was done before April 17:
Content: Four weeks of blog content was pre-written and scheduled across ClipForge, Strategia-X, Lumina Studio, and WealthWise. The April 14–16 posts were specifically chosen for creator and video-repurposing themes to warm the audience toward the product category before the launch.
Product Hunt assets: Product description, tagline, first-comment founder story, six gallery screenshots, and a 60-second demo were finalized and uploaded to the PH draft by April 10.
Supporter outreach: Starting April 7, direct outreach went to existing subscribers, newsletter readers, and prior engaged community members — organized into three tiers based on relationship depth and likelihood to upvote on launch day.
Social content: Twitter/X, LinkedIn, and YouTube posts were queued for April 17 launch day, timed to the Pacific midnight window when the PH day resets.
Tagline: "Turn any long video into short-form clips, captions, and highlights — in minutes." Tested against two alternatives. Won on clarity.
The Numbers
| Metric | Result | |---|---| | Total upvotes | [UPVOTES] | | Final rank | [RANK] | | New signups on April 17 | [SIGNUPS_DAY] | | New signups in 7 days post-launch | [SIGNUPS_WEEK] | | Trial-to-paid conversion (72h) | [TRIAL_TO_PAID]% | | Net new MRR from launch cohort | [MRR_IMPACT] | | Traffic spike vs. prior day | [TRAFFIC_SPIKE]x | | Top traffic country | [TOP_COUNTRY] |
What Worked
The Pacific midnight start. We pushed the first social posts at 12:05 AM PT on April 17. PH days run Pacific time, and the first 2 hours establish the product's trajectory in the daily ranking. Being organized enough to hit that window without scrambling put us in a strong position early.
The first comment. The founder story pinned as the first comment on the PH listing is one of the highest-leverage pieces of content on any PH post. We spent two hours on that single comment. It converted visitors who were on the fence.
Pre-existing affiliate infrastructure. Every PH visitor who signed up had an immediate path to earn from ClipForge. The affiliate offer in the post-signup email to PH-sourced signups converted at [TRIAL_TO_PAID]% within 72 hours — the highest-converting email in our entire sequence.
Content alignment. The April 14–16 blog posts drove organic traffic to the landing page before PH traffic arrived, which meant the product page had real session data (not zero) when PH visitors landed. This matters for first impressions.
What We Would Do Differently
Earlier supporter outreach. We started DMs on April 7 (D-10). D-21 would have given more lead time for people with slow inboxes and for building reciprocal relationships with other makers launching in the same window.
A video demo. Product Hunt lists with video demos consistently outperform those without on both upvote volume and comment quality. We had screenshots. Next launch includes a 60-second screen recording.
More Reddit pre-warming. The creator subreddits (r/editors, r/youtubers, r/podcasting) had not seen ClipForge mentioned before launch day. Two or three authentic posts in the 2–3 weeks before launch would have meant more warm traffic.
What This Means for ClipForge
A Product Hunt launch is not a revenue event. It is a proof event — proof that the product is real, that real people find it useful, and that the team is serious about distribution.
The [SIGNUPS_DAY] signups on April 17 represent a launch cohort that will be tracked separately for 90 days. Their trial conversion rate, feature adoption, and retention are the signal that tells us whether the product-market fit we believe we have is real.
The [MRR_IMPACT] in net new MRR is a starting point. The 90-day cohort retention number matters more.
Try ClipForge
